Reggae on the Rising River

This note came in last night from a friend:

Here's my dad's take on the judge's ruling and the two
press releases that came out:

"Reading all this stuff is like reading different
versions of the Iraq invasion from Rumsfeld and
Kucinich! No reasonable person can understand what
the hell the judge ruled nor the reactions of the two
parties to the dispute. Did Dimmick forget there was another
court hearing?

Frankly, I didn't understand anything they said, and
just as frankly, don't give a damn. Redway must be on
the verge of anarchy."

My (my friend's) opinion is that at this point the Mateel should
take the best offer they've gotten from Dimmick and
get out now while they still can. I bet their
upcoming member meeting will be interesting.

My (Bob's) opinion? I'm thinking I was right when I waffled on the term unencumbered. After hearing the KMUD news last night where Tom Dimmick explained that the issue of the Mateel's lease will not be resolved until July 11, it's clear the battle is not over. BTW, the KMUD website now has an archive section, which should enable you to hear Estelle's report for yourself even if you did not tune in last night.
That's all for this morning, I'm heading down to the Farmers' Market where I'll probably be asked what's up with Reggae, then this afternoon, some of you will see me at Coco's benefit at the Mateel, where I'm certain the recent news will be the topic du jour.

Comments:
when is that planning comission meeting again? I guess I would be fooling myself if i thought things would be resolved then.

The Planning Commission mets at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 3, in the Supervisors chambers in the Humboldt County Courthouse. The hearing is broadcast live on the Access channel if you have cable TV.

Hey Bob, Were you at Coco's benefit? Wasn't it great that healing was the main thing happening. It was the old Mateel and although there were plenty of people with different points of view, that was not the topic. Politics stayed outside the gate. It's possible to disagree and still respect each other.I think (hope) that healing was going on on many levels in the hall.
I, for one, love the Mateel Community Center. I was on the crew that built it. I've worked for over 20 years helping raise money to support it (I'm an original reggae coordinator). I will be working for Reggae Rising, if it gets to happen, along with all the major reggaeontheriver(no TM)longtime coordinators.
But the beautiful thing is none of that was at Coco's benefit. We are still the Mateel Nation, and we built the hall for nights like that.
By the way, Bob, I met your Mom on a cruise through the Panama Canal, a few years ago. I hope to meet you sometime.

True community spirit in SoHum is never about politics. Community spirit always transcends local politics. Those of us who really feel the spirit have a basic mantra of "all for one and one for all".

The old-timers feel this, no matter what the current politics or drama expresses.

So-hum and the Mateel Tribe will live on, no matter what.

Happy to be an old-school local, who has faith in this community.

Yes, it's true the meeting is scheduled. It is also true that it is NOT a public hearing, and NOT a forum for public comment.

Whether you are Mateel/ROTR or PP/Reggae Rising, if you show up at this meeting, you are likely only to piss off the planning commision. The PC made it clear the last few months that they are weary of the dispute. They want us to unite, and produce ONE festival. Judge Watson cleared the way for one festival. Maybe we should follow his lead?
