PLACE: Dimmick Ranch / French’s Camp, Piercy Calif.

[Humboldt County, CA June 8th, 2007] People Productions and the Dimmick Ranch are breathing a sigh of relief after last night’s Humboldt County Planning Commission meeting in which the Reggae Rising Music Festival was given the green light to move forward, despite the Mateel Community Center’s attempt to have the planning commission revoke the CUP. “I’d just hate to see this thing die” stated Commissioner Bruce Emad.

Reggae Rising Music Festival is a benefit for the Southern Humboldt community and will carry on the 23 year tradition of being one of the largest fundraisers for its non-profits. To date there are 20 non-profits signed on including; all of the volunteer fire departments, Beginnings School, KMUD Radio, Schools Foundation, Garberville Town Square, Trees Foundation, Vets For Peace and the Veterans of Foreign War to name of few. In addition to the support of the local non-profits the festival also has been given the green light from county agencies including; the Mendocino and Humboldt county Sheriff’s department, Cal Trans, California Highway Patrol, Army Corp. of Engineers, Forestry Service and Cal. From the Times Standard:
Doesn't sound like a 'Green Light'

EUREKA -- Community Development Services Director Kirk Girard will closely monitor the ongoing legal battle in the reggae dispute -- as well as the producer's progress in meeting necessary benchmarks -- and could seek to nix the event's permit in July if issues remain.

The Humboldt County Planning Commission, on a vote of 4-2, approved giving Girard that authority Thursday, due to the dwindling time before the event is to take place. Commissioners Jeffrey Smith and Richard Hansis were opposed.

One major concern is that while the Mateel Community Center has said it will not put on an event this year, a judge could rule that People Productions has no right to do so.

If that happens with only a short window remaining before the concert, public safety could be at risk, said Smith.

Several commissioners seemed intent on doing all they could to allow the event to go forward while still protecting the public's health and safety. They even set aside a previous deadline for the permit ownership issue to be decided -- today.

”I'd just hate to see this thing die,” said Commissioner Bruce Emad.

The commission directed Girard to make any such determination before the July 17 supervisors'

Bob just to let you know that this press release is not accurate. Not all the groups they say signed on have signed on. The Sprowl Creek Fire Dept won't be there as well as Salmon Creek School and Whitethorn School. KMUD HAS NOT signed on.This will be decided at their 6/27 Board meeting.

OH NO the sprowel creek fire department won't be there. AAARRGHHH. For heavens sake why will anyone go to reggae rising now that their favorite rootbeer float stand will not be present, and as a festival attendee for several years I would like to ask for more for profit food booths. one booth had a closed sign on its window sunday at noon, with the caption, "Last year we went home with too much stuff so this year you go home hungry." Lets continue to support the meager attempts at feeding us in the name of non profitability. Just once sunday afternoon I would like to walk up to a booth and be able to order something on the menu board and have them say "that will be right up."
