KMUD Pulls Out

The special meeting of the KMUD Board of Directors on Monday was supposed to focus on the question: "Should 50% of the proceeds of the KMUD Ice Coffee Booth at the Reggae Festival be given to the Mateel Community Center?"

The result was another impassioned community forum, broadcast live on KMUD, about the ethical issues surrounding the ongoing controversy. Sorry I do not have time to transcribe the various speeches, which went on for nearly an hour. Thanks to the amazingly convenient KMUD archive with podcasts and downloads, you can listen to the discussion here.

As new general manager Brenda Starr noted, the money from the booth makes up 50 percent of KMUD's events income. Someone else pointed out that the money is only one percent of the station's total budget. There was a lot more talk that had little to do with money and more to do with moral values.

In the end the 50% to the Mateel idea fell by the wayside with the question turning into whether or not KMUD should sell their famous Mud at Reggae Rising at all.

The meeting concluded with two motions, first one to rescind the previous vote to have a booth. That passed, then a second issue was addressed: Should KMUD decline to do the coffee booth at Reggae Rising?

Said Brenda Starr, "Discussion included its fiduciary and fiscal decision making and 'where's the love?'"

The bottom line: the board voted unanimously to decline participation in Reggae Rising.

There was talk of the impact on the next fund drive and of an alternate fund raiser.

And as Brenda noted, "In light of the situation, a hat was passed for KMUD donations and $600 was raised."

Comments:
Why is it that anytime a group of people in SoHum meet to discuss a business proposition they vote to destroy the business?

It's enough to turn you into a card carrying Republican.

Possibly you already are a card carrying Republican.I predict that KMUD will now not lose the many memberships and donations that were being re-routed to the Mateel. To take the high road, to make a decision on moral grounds rather than solely basing one's decisions on the $ bottom line is most often difficult. Many calm solid members of this community spoke eloquently. This is a moral issue and from what I can see and hear Reggae Rising is based upon many immoral and unethical actions. I commend this community for saying no. I hope the audience that are buying tickets because they know nothing of the history will be faced with a picket line to cross. No justice, no peace.

Where do all these people get the idea that Reggae Rising is somehow based on Republican values. It is a idiotic comparison. I did buy a ticket, I will go and have a great time even if some morons stand out on 101 in the heat with a few signs while I am swimming in the river, drinking a cold corona and listening to sweet sweet reggae music. I know the history and think that PP will put on a far greater show than Mateel could ever have done.

you have to realize that only a small percentage of potential festival attendees have any knowledge of the drama going on right now regarding this..... seems a little retarded that folks from around the country, and the world, who travel here for the event would have to cross a picket line of SoHum folks who feel they have been screwed out their event..... i am not denying that this may be the case, but what a wonderful way to welcome strangers to your county than to have them cross a picket line to attend an event...... you think the vibe in the air in SoHum is bad now, wait til stories circulate the globe about how negative the locals are......picket lines are meant to be crossed..... and cross them we will.....

Anyone moronic enough to stand on the highway carrying a sign and disrupting traffic to protest a concert deserves the swift kick in the rear they will receive from CHP. Are you serious? You are protesting a concert when there are people dying every day in Iraq and no one is marching in the streets.

why does it always have to turn into this train of thought..... ?

"I know the history and think that PP will put on a far greater show than Mateel could ever have done."

oh really?! you do?! are you reading the "history" from the great book of knowledge? i was unaware that you were the all-seeing eye that could predict the future.....

you know, i have faith that carol and PP can put on a nice show as they have in the past. but you can't act as if this festival has always been run the best it could be, or is by any means perfected to a point, where there is only 1 person or company is capable of running it. do you think carol and her crew are the only people to ever put together a reggae festival? carol and PP will do everything the same way the have always done it: semi-chaotic, un-informed volunteers giving out conflicting information, aggressive drug sales on shakedown alley, security threatening people, rampant thefts, and all the other dysfunctions that are a signature of any major festival.... but to declare that the ability of 1 company to produce an event better than another is childish and school yard like..... "my daddy can beat up your daddy"....

why don't we keep these discussions more in the vein of "my daddy is a badass, end of discussion"

to clarify: i have no problem with carol and PP producing the event on a purely functional standpoint. i know they can pull it off. thay have many times before. but we don't know what kind of event that Mateel (as you say, even though it would have been 2B1 producing the event, which is a company that has produced 10 fold the amount of events carol has ever put together, so gee they are so unqualified...) "could have ever done" cuz they were not given the opportunity to show us. so to try and compare them is juvenille. as far as PP producing the event, on the morality level....... well that's another discussion for another thread (actually i think you can find about a billion threads on this one out there)

My best to you all. We are all walking our paths and doing what we feel is necessary by our inner guidance. I will sure be happy when everyone gets what they need from this play called life and we can work towards areas that as a community together we can embrace

Reality Check! You forgot the 2bA-used car salesman, didn't even have confirmed headliners. Duh! Guess you missed that KMUD story. Anj. Kidjo booked in Penn. not RotR, Pato pulls out... Oh, and the ROOTS!(whom I love)I thought the Community didn't want a "more rootsier line-up" Their HIP-HOP! Yeah, another no brainer for the NO BRAINERS!

11:57.... way to not address any of the questions i put out there....

just another example of what i was originally talking about......

reminds of those sports fans who, even when their team wins, they just can't let go, and keep chanting that the other team sucks.....

it's time to sit back and cheer for the fact that your team won..... who cares what team they played or how good they might have been.....

you won.... now shut up and enjoy yourself.....

Actually, I think a picket line on 101 is a great idea. Sort of a gentetic cleansing, if you will.

The fans are not the ones chanting, it is the players who should be fined for unsportsmanlike conduct. The fans just want to see a good game.

All I ask is that whatever protest is made is done peacefully. As I've said all along, this event is very important to a lot of people for a ton of different reasons. A large scale protest, or any attempt to sabotage the event from the inside could mean disaster. Please be respectful to those of us who truly know not of the politics involved, and who are traveling a long way to relax with friends and listen to world class reggae.

President Bush acknowledged that his administration leaked the name of an undercover intelligence officer contended that it is time to move on.

in this case, yes the players should be fined for unsportsmenlike conduct, but in this case the fans are right there encouraging, and pretty much endorsing the ill behavior of those players too........
